Jim Ring Book Talk & Signing – February 10, 2017

On Friday February 10 at 6 PM I will have a book talk and signing at IAM Books, 189 North Street, North End Boston just across from the Paul Revere house.

IAM functions as an Italian cultural center featuring many art forms and artists as well as offering classes on wide ranging subjects. I confess I am presently taking Italian language lessons at IAM weekly to increase my limited speaking ability. Check out their site at http://IAMbooksboston.com

Hope to see you there!

Alderbrook Farm, in the village of Russells Mills, South Dartmouth, MA, supplies residents year round with a variety of products needed on a daily basis from their own eggs, homemade baked goods, and fresh vegetables, along with, sets, seedlings and flowers as the season’s progress.

Schools bring busloads of children to take advantage of the guided farm tours and to view the animals. When anyone has a community (for me gardening) question, they often seek out owners Allen and Nancy Manley for advice. The Manley’s presently have four generations of their family working the farm. If a village can have a heartbeat, Alderbrook provides that for the South Dartmouth community.

Promoting local businesses has been an Alderbrook practice for years. I am fortunate that Nancy and Allen are willing to include Necessary Assets and 784 Broadway on their local products table as shown in this picture.

On May 23, a blog interview of Jim Ring will be conducted by Joanne Tailele, President of the Marco Island Writer’s Group, and can be found on her blog site http://joannetailele.wordpress.com. Tailele is herself an author and she and her books can be located at www.joannetailele.com

Author Jim Ring (left) makes a presentation of Necessary Assets to primary reader Ken O’Brien at a book celebration held at the Marco Island Florida Yacht Club March 26, 2014. Also while in Marco Island, Florida, I joined the Marco Island Writers. This group was formed a few years ago by writers wishing to help other writers. They interact and share resources with another like group active in Naples and Fort Myers, Florida. Marco Island Writers are an important part of literary life in Southwest Florida and a very welcoming group of published writers covering many genres.

I also met up with an old friend from FBI days. He has a great story to tell about two young men who chose opposite paths in life. One became an FBI agent and the other a gangster. My friend had several starts and stops trying to get the beginning of the novel where he wanted it. After our discussion I was pleased to receive his email saying he was now well on his way. We will stay in contact and I hope to read for him as others did for me.

Bombay Liquors and Book Den just opened on Bald Eagle Road on Marco, Island. What is unique about this new business is its second half. A substantial amount of store space is dedicated to the sale of new and used books. It has plenty of comfortable seating and one can enjoy an alcoholic beverage while shopping for or reading a book. They also dedicated prime shelf space to promote works by local authors. Necessary Assets quickly found a home at Bombay.

On February 20 I attended a book club meeting at the home of my friend Claudia Settle. Gathered with her to discuss Necessary Assets was another half dozen of the club members. What a great time and what great questions they asked. It was interesting for me to be able to sit with readers for in-depth conversation about their observations and to hear their analysis of what I had written. I was much encouraged by them to begin the sequel. photo 3 On Saturday January 11 over forty souls braved near hurricane weather to attend this new lecture series being hosted by Katherine Russell. My talk focused on the origins and development of the 19th century English detective in both literature and in real life. Discussion focused on how literature generated positive influences and promoted professionalism within the official detective force.

On Saturday January 11, 2014, at the Shattuck Gallery in Westport, Massachusetts, I will present a lecture on  the development of the 18th century detective story in fiction as well as the official counterpart in real life. We will discuss the principles established for writing detective fiction and how they carry over to new works such as Necessary Assets. This is a beginning to a winter film and lecture series being organized and presented by Katherine Russell.
